Introduction to PIECES of HISTORY
Quilts speak to us in many ways. Their beauty captivates us, and the long-ago voices we can hear whispering through their stitches intrigue us. We are drawn to their patterns—seeing symmetry and design emerge from dozens of small squares, triangles, or circles. We are drawn to their names—tripping down a Rocky Road to Kansas, dancing along with a Heel Tap and Shoe Point, or wishing upon a Blazing Star. And we are drawn to the stories they tell—of a mother who watched over her newborn as she stitched the squares she would save for almost twenty years before making them into a wedding quilt for her daughter; of women who gathered with relatives and friends to sew and sign a quilt destined to become a family heirloom; of a sixteen-year-old girl who gathered pieces of silk from family, friends, and suitors to construct the quilt she would one day hand down to a grand-daughter whose future existence she could hardly have imagined at the time.
The North Carolina Museum of History has been collecting quilts since 1926, preserving the skill and passion of generations of North Carolina needlewomen. The collection contains more than 200 pieces, including full-size quilts, cradle and doll quilts, quilt tops, backs, and individual squares, ranging in date from the first quarter of the nineteenth century to the present. From this large collection, the museum has selected twenty-five quilts made between ca. 1848 and 1974 to reproduce as patterns in this publication.
This book was produced by the museum in conjunction with the Raleigh-based Capital Quilters Guild. The patterns in Volume I were originally produced in 1979 for the first North Carolina Quilt Symposium. The patterns in Volume II were produced in 2003 in honor of the symposium's twenty-fifth anniversary. They showcase quilts the museum has collected since the first set of patterns was published.
